Airports save one million tonnes of CO2 under Airport Carbon Accreditation

2 April 2025

Brussels: Airports Council International has today released the annual results on carbon performance and participation trends for its global carbon management standard for airports, Airport Carbon Accreditation.

The newly released report spans the period from May 2023 through May 2024, with headline results including:

  • Accredited airports collectively reduced over 1 million tonnes of CO2: ‑1,037,292 CO2e (‑14.8%);
  • The number of accredited airports rose to 558 across 87 countries — with 70 airports joining the programme for the first time and 132 progressing to a higher level of carbon management;
  • More than half of the world’s passengers travelled through an Airport Carbon Accredited airport (51.5%1 of global passenger traffic covered);
  • At the end of the reporting period, 15 airports had achieved the highest Level 5 accreditation, having reached net zero for emissions under their control (scopes 1 & 2) and committed to full decarbonisation across all scopes by 2050.

Olivier Jankovec, ACI EUROPE Director General
said: “With science leaving no doubt over the fact that global warming is accelerating and that climate action must remain a top priority, it is heartening to see that reducing carbon has truly become embedded in airport management across the globe. For the 15th year running, Airport Carbon Accreditation has outperformed the previous year’s results, with impressive participation growth in all regions and substantial CO2 savings. This was also the first full reporting period featuring the newly established Level 5, which certifies airports that have achieved net zero for emissions from sources under their control. Fifteen airports globally held this accreditation at the end of the period — demonstrating step change in climate leadership. I would like to congratulate all participating airports on another year of translating ambition into real‑world results and action.”

    About Airport Carbon Accreditation

    Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally‑endorsed, global carbon management certification programme for airports. It independently assesses and recognises the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions.

    Through its seven progressively stringent levels of certification, Airport Carbon Accreditation acknowledges that airports are at different stages in their journey towards comprehensive carbon management. It is a programme for airports of all sizes, extending beyond hubs and regional airports with scheduled passenger traffic, to include general aviation and freight‑focused airports.
